History Curriculum Overview
At St Luke’s we provide children with a coherent knowledge specifically sequenced to improve pupils understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world.
We hope to inspire our children’s curiosity about people and events of the past that have significant influences on our modern day lives.
History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.
Our curriculum provides an in depth look at key historical concepts including empires, trade and culture and skills such as chronological awareness, causation and interpretation to help our pupils to become lifelong learners and understand the ever changing world we all live in.

Currently Year 1/2 are working work on a two year rota:
Year A | Discovering History | Kings, Queens and Leaders | Parliament and Prime Ministers |
---|---|---|---|
Year B | Powerful Voices | The Romans in Britain | The Tudors; (teachers introduce concept of Kings and Queens to those who have not yet met this) |
Currently Years 3/4 and 5 are working on a 3 year rota of units and Year 6 cover their Year 6 units.
This approach allows us to effectively map out a full provision across a child’s time in KS2. Teachers carefully adapt content by pre teaching concepts if a child has not come across key content before.
